In early February, the NC Task Force conducted a series of local advocacy events where music therapists gathered to contact legislators in an effort to educate and secure support for future legislation. To date, over 120 emails were sent to members of the House and Senate. From that, we have had numerous requests for additional information, phone conversations, and meetings. We have one senior representative who has expressed interest in sponsoring legislation in 2017. Between now and January 2017, we plan to continue to educate and secure support for legislation, and to work with the representative's office to have legislation ready for next term.
As you all know, exercising your right to vote is an opportunity to let your voice be heard. North Carolina will be electing a new legislature this year, possibly one to vote on state recognition of music therapy in the upcoming year. While we know there are a lot of topics influencing your vote this year, here are some resources and info on state politics directly related to music. The MTANC Task Force is excited to share news of the introduction of House Bill 192 - Establish Music Therapy Practice Act. This legislation was filed on Thursday, 2/23/17. Our primary sponsors are Representatives Harry Warren, Hugh Blackwell, Kevin Corbin, and Linda Hunt Williams. Please take a moment to email your representative and ask for their support of H192. And, as always, contact the Task Force at email@example.com with any questions or responses you receive from legislators.
