Facility
Cherry Hospital is a 313-bed inpatient psychiatric hospital serving the citizens of 38 Eastern North Carolina counties. As a place of hope, care and recovery, Cherry Hospital has been working to improve the lives of those experiencing severe mental illness between the ages of 12-90+ for more than a century. Cherry Hospital has five treatment units – Adolescent, Adult Acute Admissions, Geriatric Admissions, Psychiatric Rehabilitation, and Psychiatric Medical. Professional services include psychiatry, psychology, nursing, social work, occupational therapy, recreation therapy, physical therapy, peer support, and creative expressive arts therapy. At Cherry Hospital, the Creative Expressive Arts department consists of four music therapists, one art therapist, and one drama therapist. Music therapy services are provided individually, by referral, and in small groups.
Training
Cherry Hospital prides itself on being a teaching hospital and assisting with the education of future healthcare professionals. The music therapy intern will have many opportunities to attend various trainings offered hospital-wide, work closely with other disciplines, and provide music therapy services to patients with a wide range of needs. In addition to in-depth, professional trainings (including Crisis Prevention Interventions, CPR, and first aid) and orientation to Cherry Hospital, accepted applicants will be required to complete a criminal background check, a drug screening (10-panel or higher), the Titer’s Blood Test, and provide immunization records and proof of a current flu vaccine. A TB skin test may be required, but will be provided through employee health at no cost to the intern. Music therapy interns should be enthusiastic, have good communication and music skills, exhibit professionalism, and be interested in working with patients with severe mental illness.
