Facility

Broughton Hospital is a state psychiatric hospital serving the 37 western counties of North Carolina. Over 1,400 people a year between the ages of 12-90+ receive mental health treatment at Broughton Hospital. The catchment area is rural. The hospital is organized into three divisions (adult acute admissions, adult extended treatment, and specialty services). Patients receive individualized, recovery based treatment in the various treatment malls, and individually by referral. Professional services include psychiatry, nursing, psychology, social work, occupational therapy, physical therapy, peer support, recreation therapy, and creative expressive arts therapy. At Broughton Hospital, music therapy functions as part of a thirty-seven person Recreation Therapy/Creative Expressive Arts Department. The CEA Department consists of four music therapists and one art specialist. Music therapy is provided across the hospital in small groups and individually by referral.

Training

Broughton Hospital offers the music therapy intern the opportunity to function as part of a very busy creative expressive arts therapy department. Interns have a thorough, professional orientation to Broughton Hospital and to the CEA Department. Accepted applicants undergo a criminal background check and drug screening. Interns must provide immunization record and proof of a current flu vaccine as a prerequisite for internship. During orientation, the intern must pass CPR and other presented trainings. Interns must follow the policies and procedures of Broughton Hospital. Broughton is a tobacco free facility for patients and staff. The internship is based on AMTA Competencies, the Scope of Music Therapy Practice, and Mental Health Recovery Principles. Music therapy interns should have good personal boundaries and an interest in persons with severe and persistent mental illness.
