Facility Characteristics
The J. Iverson Riddle Developmental Center (JIRDC) is a 350-bed ICF/MR facility located in the foothills of North Carolina. The Center primarily serves adults and older adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities who have a wide range of functioning levels. Specific resident needs include severe and profound intellectual disabilities, physical and/or multiple handicaps, autistic spectrum disorders, and communication limitations. Many of the residents maintain a higher level of independence through the use of switches, communication boards, and other adaptive equipment. The music therapy internship at JIRDC provides clinical training experience within the context of the Creative Therapy Department. The Creative Therapy Department houses two board-certified music therapists; specialists degreed in their respective fields also offer drama and art opportunities.

Each intern will have the opportunity to work directly with two board-certified music therapists, as well as staff in Creative Therapy, OT, PT, speech/language pathology, psychology, recreation therapy, and special education. The intern will gain experience in maintaining a full caseload, including documentation and treatment team participation. In addition, three major projects will be required, which can be designed according to the internÕs interests. There may also be opportunities to participate in community outreach and research. Prospective interns who are chosen to interview for the internship position should be prepared to demonstrate excellent music skills in voice and guitar, and should be proficient in piano. For further information and to apply to the internship, visit the Creative Therapy link under Therapeutic Services at www.jirdc.org, or contact Amy Kemp Inman at amy.inman@ncmail.net
